Timberline Lodge is located at approximately 6,000 feet above sea level on the south flank of Oregon's famous Mount Hood. Grant Associates was hired by the U.S. Forest Service to remove two 12,000 gallon underground storage tanks that did not meet the 1998 federal UST upgrade requirements.
The tanks had previously been identified as leaking USTs. Due to the significant slopes in the area, and ancient subsurface lava flow features, the petroleum product had migrated over a distance of approximately two miles down slope.
Grant removed and disposed of the two USTs and excavated, transported, and disposed of approximately 600 tons of contaminated soil while braving inclement weather conditions and snowfall.
Grant then prepared a detailed technical report for submission to the Oregon DEQ for tank closure. Grant's successful completion of the project helped the U.S. Forest Service achieve its mission of continued preservation of this national treasure.
